ABC Alumni, along with ABC Friends, is campaigned loudly to inform all candidates and the voting public of the real issues facing the ABC
The danger signs were clear. In Australia there are formidable forces out to further defund, or even privatise, the ABC. Overseas, public broadcasting is under attack. The Trump administration in the US is cancelling Voice of America and will probably stop all federal funding of public radio (NPR) and television (PBS). With the election of the Albanese Government in the majority, the worst scenario has been avoided. The ABC, however still needs a major reinvestment to enable it to fulfil its charter obligations in the new digital world.
On this page, you can also access a wealth of material that will help you to understand:
- the increasing demands on that budget as the ABC takes its place in the competitive world of digital content,
- the ABC's value to all Australians in telling Australian stories from across the country, and to the diverse communities that make up our rich society
- its pivotal and expanding role in emergency broadcasting
- its unwavering commitment to impartiality, and investigative journalism
- ABC International's role in supporting our Pacific neighbours and coverage of world events that reverberate here in Australia.
